Differences in bookable S/MIME certificates
Foreword
S/MIME stands for Secure / Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions and is a standard that allows you to encrypt and sign your e-mail messages using cryptography with a public key. S/MIME ensures that your e-mail messages are confidential, authentic and unaltered, regardless of to whom or where they are sent.
With our range of S/MIME certificates from GlobalSign, you can protect your email the way you want or need to. There are a total of three validation classes for S/MIME certificates. The following article explains the different variants in more detail.
GlobalSign Personal Sign 1
The Personal Sign 1 is a popular e-mail certificate for private and business e-mail addresses. With the Personal Sign 1 certificate from GlobalSign you can verify and encrypt your e-mail and ensure secure and trustworthy e-mail communication. Only the existence of the requested e-mail address is checked, so this certificate can be issued particularly quickly.

In addition to the company data and e-mail address, the certificate also displays the first and last name of the certificate holder. A VideoIdent procedure is used to validate the certificate, which you carry out with a GlobalSign employee. Please note that the Ident call can currently only be made in English.
PersonalSign 2 Department
The GlobalSign Personal Sign 2 Department is an e-mail certificate for business e-mail addresses and collective e-mail addresses. The following details are then entered in the S/MIME certificate: company name, company address and the general e-mail inbox.
To issue a PersonalSign 2 Department, in addition to a valid e-mail address and the person making the request, the company in which the designated person works is also checked. For this purpose, the information provided when ordering is verified by the certification body by requesting documents (person: identity card or driver's license; company: extract from the commercial register).
After checking the above points, the certificate is then issued with the first and last name as well as the company name and thus offers the highest validity when signing and encrypting.\n
