Backups

Using the DNS Zone Backups feature, you can create manual or automatic backups of your DNS zone. The backups are saved in BIND format and can be used to export DNS zones or to restore them.

To manage the backups of a DNS zone, select the corresponding DNS zone in Zone Management. You can then manage the backups of the DNS zone via the Backups menu item.

Creating a Backup

DNS zone backups are created in two different ways. A distinction is made here between automatic and manual backup creation.

Automatic Backups

If the DNS zone has been modified in the last 24 hours—either through manual changes or automated changes via our REST API—an automated backup of the DNS zone is created automatically at 12:00 a.m. (UTC).

Automatic backups are only created if the new backup differs from the old one.

Manual Backups

To create a manual backup of a DNS zone, click the Create Backup button.

You can optionally add a description to the backup, for example, to document specific changes in detail so that you can easily locate the backup in the event of a future restore.

Restore a Backup

To restore a backup of a DNS zone, click on the desired backup to initiate the restoration.

Before the restore, the number of DNS records before and after the restore will be displayed.

Before restoring a backup, it is recommended that you create a backup of the current state so that you can undo the restoration if necessary.

Download Backup

Clicking the Download Backup button exports the backup as a BIND file.
